When I did Little Miss cake smash, I found this really cool galvanized oval tub. I knew I wanted to use it for something after the cake smash. We love to garden every year and so I figured this would make the cutest little garden bed!
At first, I wanted to use this old red radio flyer for my veggie garden, but it worked so much better as a succulent garden. We have to do container gardens because we rent and don’t want to mess up the grass where we currently live.
We’ve always rented, so we’ve always done container gardens. It’s most ideal to build a garden bed, like this raised garden bed that we made. But containers work so well, you just need a lot of them.
How to Make a Raised Garden Bed Cheap
All you need to make this galvanized tub raised garden bed is a galvanized tub, drill with a larger drill bit, rocks, dirt, and plants.
First, flip the tub over, and drill drainage holes in the bottom with your drill. We drilled drainage holes all over the bottom of the tub to make sure our plants wouldn’t sit in water.
Then we lined the bottom of the tub with rock. We have lots of rock already in our backyard. It lines the planters.
I just used rock we already had. The rock was added for two reasons. One, to make sure that dirt didn’t escape through the holes, and two to give more drainage.
Then put in your soil. I like to use good organic soil made specifically for vegetables and fruits. Now add your plants!
Depending on what type of plants you are planting, you’ll be able to plant 2-10 plants. It’s not a huge tub, but I like to use the Square Foot Gardening Method. Especially since we garden in smaller containers.
