How to Make a Birth Announcement

Sharing is caring!

One of the best things about having a brand new baby is choosing how to announce your new addition to the world! Of course, you could just post a picture on Facebook or Instagram, but that really doesn’t have the same feel as a true birth announcement. I’m old at heart and I still love sending and receiving mail. To me, there is something special about sending out an announcement to my friends and family. I think it shows them how much you care and who doesn’t want to see adorable baby photos in their mail! It sure beats all the junk mail and bills!

How to Make a Birth Announcement

Where to Make the Announcement

There are plenty of websites where you can create birth announcements. You can also use an editing software like PicMonkey to add words to a photo or collage of photos and have that printed as well.

I personally love to use Shutterfly for all my announcements, Christmas cards, etc. They have wonderful options and their shipping is fast. They also have an option to address and/or mail out the announcements for you. This option is a little pricier, but as a new mom this is definitely something to think about! You can load all your addresses before baby is born so you won’t have to think about it after.

Picking the Announcement

You want an announcement that is fairly big. I would suggest picking a 5×7 as that is a good size. You want something with room for lots of photos. I personally like ones that have room for photos on the front and the back, so that I have more photos that I can pick to display on the card. As for color and theme: go wild! Pick any announcement that you love!

I recommend picking out the announcement before baby is born. There are so many options, and once baby comes you likely won’t have time to be browsing through the many different options. Pick your favorite 2-3 before baby comes and then once baby arrives and you pick your photos you can see which announcement works best.

Picking the Photos

You can take photos yourself or have your photos professionally taken. I do recommend having some family photos taken when your child is still a newborn. There is nothing better than having photos of yourself holding your baby.

If you decide to take photos yourself, here are some tips:

  1. Use Natural Light- You don’t want it to be too bright, but natural light streaming in through a window during the day will be best.
  2. Choose a neutral background- You don’t want a lot of clutter in the background. I recommend laying your baby in the crib to take some photos or having someone hold them so you can get a few shots.
  3.  Zoom In- Focus on those little baby hands, fingers, and toes. Don’t feel like you have to have your whole baby in every shot. Their little unique features are just as sweet.

What to Say

Keep it simple. There is no need to write anything elaborate. I would keep it to your child’s name, birth date, weight, and length, and then whoever is announcing the birth. No need to write out a paragraph or to say anything else except to announce the birth. Of course, if you want to write something extra you can, but don’t feel like you must.

I recommend printing out address labels for all the people you want to send the announcements to and buying stamps before baby is born, as it’s one less thing you will have to think about. Or you can go with Shutterfly and have them address and/or mail out the announcements for you, for an extra fee.

I hope these tips help you and I would love to see any announcement that you make using these tips! If you need photos done or have any questions, please contact me.
