Congratulations! Soon you will have a new bundle of joy and with that new bundle comes many decisions, from car seats and pediatricians to breast feeding and co-sleeping. None of which are to be taken lightly. But one of the more fun decisions you get to make is how you plan on documenting your baby’s life once they have come into the world. There are many different ways to document your baby’s journey and those first few weeks of life. You could have a maternity session, a fresh 48, a birth photographer, a newborn session at your home, or a newborn session in studio. These are the most common photography sessions that people choose between. You can book more than one and pick and choose between different photographers in order to get all the photos that you really want of this special time. Personally, one of my favorites is a newborn session at your home.
A newborn session at your home will be photographed lifestyle or a documentary style, meaning the photos will be mostly unposed and I will be using natural or available light. You will receive a mix of black and white and color photos in order to tell your story.
5 Reasons to Book a Newborn Session at Your Home
1. Intimate and Familiar
I only do newborn sessions in my clients home. This is the first home that your child will ever know. You have spent time deciding on the decor for your baby’s nursery and I’m sure you’ve been busy nesting and making your house ready for baby. Why not capture all that hard work?! We can take photos in the nursery, in your room, or anywhere else that you spend your time. You are familiar with your home and that will allow you to relax during your session so that real moments can be captured. This also makes it easier for children and pets, they will be able to do their own thing in a comfortable environment and still be able to be included in the session.
2. You only get one chance.
You’re baby will never be this small again and you only get one chance to capture all those little firsts between baby and the rest of the family. While your baby may have already been home for a week or two or more at this point, you are still adjusting and transitioning, as is the rest of the family. Use this time to capture all the little things that make up this new family.
3. All about the love of a new family.
The focus of these sessions is to capture the joy and love of a new and growing family. Whatever areas of your home are special to you we can include in the session. This allows for the session to really be personalized to the clients specific needs. It is very different from other sessions you may do as baby gets older such as portraits that you will get as a family for the rest of your lives. A lifestyle newborn session in your home aims to capture the story that is unfolding. That of new life and transitioning families, feelings of love and the bond you share with your new baby and your partner.
4. You will miss this.
Babies grow really fast and change almost daily, especially during those first few weeks. You are going to want to remember how small baby was in your arms, how much love was pouring out of you during this time, and the love from those around you. These pictures will be able to tell that story, even when you can’t quite remember all the details. Let’s face it, our minds are not as great at remembering things as we sometimes want then to be, and it will be nice to have photos to look back on of all the love that occurs during this time instead of only remembering all those dirty diapers and sleepless nights. You’ll remember those too, but having something tangible to hold and look at during those weeks will make it that much easier.
5. Being Able to See the Beauty in your New Family.
I get it, you just had a baby and you aren’t sure that you will want to be in front of the camera. Maybe that is your biggest deterrent to booking a session like this. Here is a testimony from one of my lifestyle newborn clients and I think she captures beautifully why this type of session is so important.
