I would say most of us don’t get photographed everyday. Sure we may take the occasional selfie or pose for some photos with friends, but its not like were models! So how do we prepare for photo sessions? What do we bring? What do we wear? Sometimes when we are faced with something that we aren’t used to our mind draws a complete blank. Add to that fact that your 32-36 weeks pregnant, and your mind is probably drawing more blanks than usual!

I know when I had my maternity shoot at 32 weeks, I was a little overwhelmed with everything, and that’s why I wanted to write this post on how to prepare for a maternity session. You definitely don’t have to do all these things to prepare, but here’s a pretty good list of the things you will want to do.

How to Prepare for a Maternity Session

What to Wear

Be sure to check the weather and bring layers. It’s a good idea to have a back up plan for your outfit. I recommend planning for 2 outfits, and changing mid shoot. This will give you a variety of looks and you can bring something that is covered up and something that shows your belly if you want. Also, make sure whatever your wearing is comfortable and allows you to move freely. If you want more specifics on ideas for what to wear check out this blog post.

Pamper Yourself

Pamper yourself mom! Make sure to get your nails done, or do them yourself. Even if your planning on wearing closed toed shoes, get your toe nails done. I always feel better about myself when my toe nails are done! Plus, I felt it made my feet look less swollen. If you want, get your hair and make up done the day of the shoot. Make sure to moisturize too, especially that belly and your hands! A lot of pictures will be focused on your belly and on hands, so make sure your significant other’s hands are moisturized too.

What to Bring

I recommend packing a bag the night before so you won’t forget anything. Put any props in it that you want to bring. Here are some great ideas for props for a maternity shoot. Also, put in some snacks and water bottles. You should definitely be drinking water and should have something to munch on in case you get hungry. Plus, these are good things to have for kids and husbands too. Sometimes they get cranky! Finally, pack a blanket so that you can sit on the ground if necessary. I always try to have one in the back of my car for photo shoots, but if your going for a specific color its always good to bring one you like along.

Hopefully this makes you a little more at ease preparing for your photo shoot!
