How to Prepare for a Cake Smash

Sharing is caring!

Wondering how to prepare for a cake smash? It is a little different than any other photoshoot. For one your child will be left to their own devices and will be allowed to get really messy! You’re child may love this, or they may be very delicate as they try to taste the cake. Either way it makes for a lot of fun and some great photos!

How to Prepare for a Cake Smash

Well Rested and Fed

Make sure your child is well rested and has eaten before the shoot. You don’t want them to get cranky during the shoot. Don’t think that because they will be eating during the shoot that they don’t need to eat before hand. First, you probably don’t want your child getting filled up on sweets. Second, in my experience a lot of children don’t eat a lot of the cake. They tend to squish it around and rub it on their face.

Make Sure They’ve Had the Food Before

Make sure your child has had whatever you are feeding them before. Do not give them new food for the first time during the session. I have the parents provide the food because of food allergies. I also find that if the parent brings the food they tend to already know that their child like it. You’re child will be more likely to go at it if it is something they are already familiar with and like. If your child doesn’t like cake I have listed some great cake smash alternatives.

What to Bring

Obviously bring the cake! Also, bring a special outfit for your child and then something for them to change into after. They will get cake everywhere, probably all in their hair and all over whatever they are wearing while smashing the cake. Expect that they might get a little cake on you too. So bring a towel to help you clean up your child and yourself! I would also recommend bringing a plastic bag to put the soiled clothes into, so they don’t get cake all over your car, or in your purse.

Hopefully this makes you a little more at ease preparing for your photo shoot!
