Sharing is caring!

In 2020, stuck at home, I decided to make a number of ornaments for Christmas. My favorite were probably these macrame ornaments.

Tips for Making a Macrame Ornament

Tape Down Your Cinnamon Stick

Use blue tape to tape down your cinnamon stick. Don’t use clear tape, it’s not wide enough.

Blue tape won’t shift and is wide enough to secure the stick over the sides to help prevent shifting.

Attach the hanger last

Don’t attach the hanger to your project first. It’s easier to attach it at the very end.

Make the string much longer than you think you’ll need. It’s better to cut off excess than not have enough!

How to Start the Macrame

Create a Lark’s head knot. It’s a really simple knot and is used to start any type of project where you loop yarn around things.

Basically fold the yarn in half, place the cinnamon stick on top of the yarn that is folded in half. Put the loose ends of thread through the loop, wrapping the yarn around the cinnamon stick and pull.

Do this 5 times. This will create 10 strands of yarn.

How to Make a Half Hitch Knot

The only other knot you have to know to make these is a half hitch knot. You’ve probably done this knot before, especially if you’ve ever made 90s friendship bracelets.

Basically, you create a 4 shape over one string, then loop your string around and through the hole you created. Then pull to tighten.

Making a Diagonal Pattern

To make a diagonal pattern, instead of looping around the same sting multiple times, using the same string you made the initial knot with, go to the second string instead of the one you just made a knot on.

Materials

  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Small Comb

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Tape

Instructions

  1. Wrap 5 yarn around your cinnamon stick using a larks head knot.
  2. Then do half hitch knots diagonally until you reach the center. Then do the same on the other side. Keep going until you reach the length you want.
  3. Once done, cut the ends but leave a little extra yarn hanging. Then brush out the ends with the small comb
  4. If you're not confident at making the knots, or want another style, they also look cool without knots or with a braid.
  5. Just wrap yarn around the cinnamon stick using a larks head knot. Then braid three strands together and leave the rest hanging. Trim all the strands the same length.
